Spongebob Squarepants movie review
Spongebob Squarepants Movie Review
The Spongebob movie is very iconic, for sure. Even if you haven’t watched it, you’ll recognise scenes and gags from it from its presence in internet culture and memes. That applies for Spongebob itself to be honest, but there's practically no one on earth who hasn't watched even a single episode of the show. I mean, up until yesterday I hadn’t watched THE SpongeBob SquarePants movie, but I sure could tell you about goofy goober and the SpongeBob yelling scene, thanks to the internet. That being said, I had watched A SpongeBob movie before, in the form of Sponge on the Run, which, to put it lightly, I didn’t really enjoy. Because, it feels like they dumbed down all of the characters, took away everything that made them charming, and made basically all the characters 1 dimensional, despite the fact we have such iconic, and to be honest, layered characters to work with, and you remove everything that makes them likeable. Not only that, but Sponge on the Run fails as an adaptation, and a film in general, because it tries to recreate the wackiness and zaniness of the original show, but it can’t, because it’s missing the FUNNINESS that the show had. Like, that film’s maybe a 4 for me?
But that’s where the first spongebob film comes in, the one I am meant to be reviewing today, not bloody Sponge on the Run. Most people hail this film as either the ‘best spongebob film’ or the ‘only good spongebob film’ and, yeah it’s definitely a great, fun film, that actually recreates what made the original series so fun, and instantly iconic. The humor is absolutely great, and there's a lot of wacky and random things that happen throughout that don’t feel forced (cough cough sponge on the run) such as David Hasselhoff randomly appearing out of thin air and basically being a motorboat, delivering Patrick and Spongebob back to bikini bottom near the end of the film. And the whole goofy goober shenanigans too. I also liked how the king was just obsessed over ways to cover his bald spot throughout the film. That was an absolutely peak gag. I think I just had fun throughout the whole film, other than one part, but other than that part, it’s just a really fun film, and a faithful adaptation to the show in it’s humor, and character likability. But I did think the scene where Patrick and Spongebob get the moustache went on for too long, and felt kind of douchey? I don’t know, maybe it was just me finding the singsong really uncomfortable, but it kind of sucked for me as a scene and rubbed me the wrong way. But that scene is a very small portion of a film I otherwise really loved! Definitely check it out if you want a fun 80 minute film. I’m feeling a light to middle 8 on this one.
absolute cinema imo
ReplyDeletecertainly a great film, I just wish the moustache scene and spongebobs little song after wasn't so drawn out.
