Superman Review
I’m very much keeping this one spoiler free as I don’t want to delve too deep into it right now.
As you may know, this film is the beginning of the James Gunn DCEU, after Marvel stopped working with him. Terrible decision from Marvel, as it means that their competitor has the advantage of the better director, as James Gunn and Ryan Coogler made the best MCU films in my opinion. So now that the most recent addition to James Gunn’s collection of films is here, and the beginning of a lineup of new comic adaptations in the DC canon, is it good? Yeah, I think so, but I do think it has its issues which I want to get off of my chest. Firstly, there was one character, and you’ll know who if you have watched the film, who was just insufferably annoying in every scene they were in, and they were in quite a bit of the film, as they were integral to the plot of the film, and finding Lex Luthor. I mentally cheered when they got captured by Lex Luthor, and it was a mood ruin when they returned in the last ten minutes after the resolution. That was the biggest complaint I have, as I just despised that character, but luckily the film otherwise, aside from very little nitpicks, was VERY good. A really fun but also profound film about the nature of being human, and what it really means to do good in the world. I loved Lex Luthor, I thought he was a really hateable and well done villain whose character was very well acted, and the scene where he ragebaits Superman is pure gold. Superman was also really well played, and I appreciate the decision to make him a weaker Superman, to be able to focus more on his sympathetic side. I thought Mr. Terrific was a pretty sick character, and Lois was also a pretty well handled version of her character as well. Krypto The Dog was obviously amazing, he’s just a silly little goofball dog that can also fly and destroys things by accident, how cute. I’m only half joking when I say that he’s the most powerful character in the film.
I thought the action was good, especially on a big screen, there were some impressive things done with the camera at points, especially in the third act. Not to get into spoilers, but the fight with ‘1A! 1A!’ was a highlight in that department. The pacing was also very good, as it felt like there was tons going on, and it was fast paced, while not really feeling like it rushed many plot points. It was very chaotic, but handled that chaos in a way that it worked pacing wise. Aside from a scene very near the end, where a character who has never been mentioned before suddenly shows up and the film acts like this is a character that was mentioned earlier in the film, (should’ve been the post credit scene instead of what we actually got) this film doesn’t have any scenes that feel like they are just there for the sake of it. It’s definitely a well executed film, which was very enjoyable to watch.
I would give this a strong 8 out of ten. Definitely very good.
