Wicked Review
I know I’m something around 7 months late on this film, but because Part 2 is releasing in autumn, I thought that now is a good time to watch the first part, of the two parter adaptation to the beloved musical, Wicked. ..It’s great. I really liked it. Bearing in mind going into this I only knew the basics, Wizard Of Oz prequel, Ariana and Cynthia play the main characters, and obviously defying gravity, so I was very much an outsider to the musical, so I’m just judging it based on its quality as a film and a musical, and not as an adaptation of the play. As a musical, I thought it was great, getting talented musicians who are experienced in musicals to do the music for it definitely helped, although, I would say that, while not a complaint for me personally, as I generally like musicals, I could see a lot of people who aren’t the biggest on musicals hating this. Due to the fact that this may be the most guilty of everything some people don’t like about the musical genre, of any musical I have watched. I didn’t care about that personally, but I can see some people who aren’t too big on the genre really hating this one for those reasons. Also, visually it was amazing, and really captures the whimsy of the Oz universe in a really incredible way, every set piece is bursting at the seams with detail and, definitely deserved that best production design award it got at the Oscars, even if Cynthia Erivo was snubbed from best actress, which was unfortunate, especially because of how good her performance was as Elphaba. Definitely the best performance in the whole film, although Ariana’s as Glinda was good too. Cynthia really sold Elphaba's pain throughout the whole film, as someone who, no matter what she does to try and prove that she's not a monster, she still ends up treated like an evil witch by the end. Great acting, but maybe the other contenders for best actress were genuinely better, I haven't watched any of those movies yet so I don’t know. Additionally, for nearly a 3 hour runtime, the film is actually still really well paced, there isn’t anything that feels like it drags, everything here feels like it serves a purpose, there aren’t particularly scenes that feel like they were there just to pad out runtime. It all felt necessary. Like every scene with the Peter Dinklage goat was there to show how The Wizard is mistreating certain citizens of Oz, which obviously plays into the conflict later in the film/ in the second part. Speaking of near the end of the film, I feel like the best sequence in the film, surprise surprise, was Defying Gravity. Seriously, not only a great song, but the visuals are stunning, and it’s all so intense, and the final moments of the song and the film and.. Oh my god… I’m trying my hardest not to get into spoilers, but just.. Wow. I can only imagine how that was in Imax, and, with that being the ending of part one, I am SO excited for Wicked: Good and Evil. Genuinely I loved this film, and I think it’s everything I want in a musical, with no major complaints from me. Genuinely, I feel like this is a 9/10.
